The women of Alpha Chi strive to make a positive impact through service activities throughout the year. From supporting our own philanthropy, Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention, to participating in different campus and community philanthropies, Alpha Chi women are very involved year-round. Here are a few of the events we participate in!
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM): Every October, domestic violence awareness month, Alpha Chi hosts an entire month of programming to raise awareness and support on campus for the victims of domestic violence. We host educational events on campus, pass out purple ribbons at the Rock, host fundraising events, and volunteer at the local domestic violence shelter.
Throw Your Way to DVA: This past spring, we partnered with Kappa Phi Lambda and raised over $700 for the YWCA by inviting students to throw a paint balloon at the Northwestern Rock, with different shades of purple paint to raise awareness for domestic violence. We also brought a dunk tank to campus and students had fun trying to dunk various campus celebrities. A campus-wide feminine product drive also brought over 800 donated products to domestic violence victims in shelters. We were proud to receive Northwestern PHA's awards for Community Spirit and Outstanding Achievement in Advancing and Expanding Campus and Community Partnerships for our spring efforts.
Healthy Relationships Week: Every February, we join Alpha Chi Omega chapters across the country in recognizing Healthy Relationships Week. This past year, we hosted a dating panel, self-defense workshop, Love Is photo contest, and made stuffed animals to donate to Luggage for Freedom, an organization that provides backpacks filled with items to support children of domestic violence victims.
Munchies Nights: Alpha Chi hosts two Munchies Nights every year. At these events, our sisters prepare and serve food to other students on campus. This year, we hosted a Donut Delivery Service, where we delivered Krispy Kreme donuts to students on campus. The proceeds from this event benefitted our Dance Marathon team. In the Spring, we also hosted a Cinnamon Roll Delivery Service where the profits of over $1,000 went to our Relay for Life team.
Dance Marathon: Every year, Alpha Chi pairs with a fraternity and participates in Northwestern Dance Marathon, the largest student run philanthropy in the country. Our sisters dance together for 30 hours to raise money for the cause. They love when those sisters who are not dancing stop by with treats and encouraging hugs, with many saying the support of their sisters is what helped them finish the 30 hours. This year, we raised more than $60,000 for Cradles to Crayons, the primary beneficiary, and the Evanston Community Foundation. Overall, Northwestern raised over $1.1 million.
Relay for Life: Alpha Chi also participates in Northwestern's Relay for Life where proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Our sisters stay overnight and rally together for 12 hours to raise money. This year, we also placed first in the medium division at Relay for Life.
Volunteering: A large part of our philanthropy involves giving back to those affected by domestic violence. Our sisters volunteer at the YWCA Evanston/Northshore's shelter for victims of domestic violence by maintaining a room through their Adopt a Room program. In 2016, we were proud to give our room a fresh coat of paint, as well as new furniture and linens.
